Rather than pursuing scale, we focus on selection—choosing only exceptional vineyard blocks across California where soil, elevation, climate, and exposure align to create fruit of remarkable quality. The result is a collection of wines shaped as much by place and season as by craftsmanship. Hailstone Vineyards was established by Chris and Jessica Zazo, whose journey into winemaking was driven by passion, curiosity, and a deep appreciation for quality. Chris’s background in roofing restoration—specifically hail damage—unexpectedly laid the foundation for the brand’s identity, while his culinary sensibility fostered a natural connection to wine as an essential part of the dining experience. What began as an unconventional path soon evolved into a serious pursuit of excellence. In 2012, Hailstone released its first vintage, Impact Cabernet Sauvignon, marking the beginning of a winery defined by thoughtful detail and distinct character. From the pewter-toned labels etched with a hailstone shattering glass to wine names inspired by the elements—Restoration, 32 Degrees, Weather Dancer—each bottle reflects the forces of nature that influence every growing season. Unlike traditional estates, Hailstone does not own land or purchase fruit by the ton. Instead, the winery leases select rows within premier vineyards, allowing for meticulous control over quality. Working closely with winemaker Chad Alexander, the team walks vineyards throughout Napa Valley—Mt. Veeder, Calistoga, Coombsville, Yountville, and Oakville—returning year after year to the sites that consistently deliver fruit of distinction. This hands-on approach ensures that every decision, from vineyard selection to final blend, is made with purpose. It is a commitment to doing things the right way, even when it means taking the longer road.
